Down in Georgia this week, Georgians will be voting for their gubernatorial primary and the race is a historic one. Not only is this a year where multiple women are in the running, it’s the first time a black woman, Stacey Abrams, is likely to clinch the nomination and go on to become the first black woman governor in American history.

Abrams race is unconventional at pretty much every level. But one thing that has attracted voters and elicited support from a diverse group of Georgians is how outspoken the former legislators in the Georgia House of Representatives has been about her personal debt that comes up to a whopping $200k. And it’s her transparency and reliability on such matters that affect so many non-rich, non-white Americans on a fundamental level.

“The difficulty of catching up and moving forward isn’t all in your head,” writes Abrams. “Systemic biases, legacy barriers, and current explosions of inequality conspire to undermine wealth generation among minorities, and especially women in these communities. But, as with all obstacles, our obligation is to acknowledge they exist and then fight like hell to circumvent them.”
