lena waithe gave the finger to the met gala’s “catholic imagination” theme
As if we could love writer/actress/show-runner Lena Waithe more than we did already, The Chi creator showed up to last night’s Met Gala making the boldest and most beautiful statement of the night. This year’s Gala theme was another controversial, low-key problematic one: “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” Which seems pretty grotesque given the Catholic Churches reputation of alleged institutional and systematic abuse of children around the world, racist foreign affairs policies, and of course discrimination against the LGBTQ+ community.
And while most attendees wore halos and crucifixes, evoking standard religious imagery that essentially ignored the very real social implications of “Catholic Imagination”, Waithe arrived and stole the show in one of the most breathtaking looks of the night: a proud, fearless, head-turning LGBTQ+ flag worn as a cape over an ultra-chic black suit. A lesbian Captain America, if you will who was brave enough to address the homophobic elephant in the room, complete with the new, more inclusive Pride flag that acknowledges QPOC, too.
Bow. Down.
