colorism takes another l in this visual celebration of dark skin women
Just in time for summer, this is photographer Vanessa Mwingira’s “Beauty by the Beach” series. Shot off the coast of Tanzania, the 21-year-old Dar-es-salaam native was inspired by the strong voice of black woman, or “Sauti ya Manka” meaning the voice of Manka. A visual message to all that people, women, with darker skin are perfect, majestic beings worthy of embracing their own complexion and refusing to conform to narrow, colorist mindsets and marketing propaganda that insists that light skin is more beautiful and desirable. It’s not. And “Beauty by the Beach” is a delightful reminder of that.
