a skate-able art plaza is juxtaposition arts’ answer to underfunding and we’re here for it
“IT’S GOING DOWN”… literally.
What do we do when an underfunded community space gets torn down?
Well according to the members of Juxtaposition Arts: you replace it with a masterpiece. The North Minneapolis-based community organization is symbolically clapping back at a the foreclosure of one of their buildings by mounting a ‘skate-able art plaza’ in it’s place.
Since 2004 the organization has worked throughout their region to guide the youth of Northern Minneapolis into the creative workforce ” as dynamic innovators and problem solvers with the confidence, skills and connections they need to accomplish their educational and professional goals, and to contribute to the revitalization of the communities where they live and work.” Now, with their space in jeopardy, and the youth demand growing, Juxtaposition Arts has teamed up with City of Skate organization to mount a skate park/art plaza in the lot where one of their buildings once stood.
By melding two worlds into one artistically and athletically stimulating package- youth across the city will be offered a well rounded experience, as well as a look into the power of repurposing resources.
This is the ULTIMATE response to underfunding, and as their Kickstarter campaign aims for the project to be mounted in September 2018, the community effort is far from over. Collectives like these are so important, and as the lives of a city’s youth gets to shape shift under their influence, the city itself changes course.
Keep your eyes open for Minneapolis’s next installment!
