You’ve probably heard about the Atlanta charter school that’s under fire after students were made wear “Blackface” masks during a Black History performance.
Does context matter in this case? The teacher who had the idea for the masks is a Black woman who says she wanted to show a part of Black History that’s “not pretty”, and actually denounce the way Black people often had to wear a “mask” in order to survive in an anti-Black world. (see screen capture below)
Does that change the way you view the incident? Can it be seen as art being used in a provocative way by a Black person to denounce their oppression?
