Huge shout outs to Nashville local, James Shaw Jr., the fearless man who saved many lives over the weekend when a white male shot up a Waffle House and killed four people: Waffle House employee, Taurean C. Sanderlin, 29, and three customers: Joe R. Perez, 20, of Nashville; DeEbony Groves, 21, of Gallatin and a student at Belmont University; and Akilah Dasilva, 23, of Antioch. During this unimaginable show of bravery, Shaw wrestled an assault rifle away from the shooter, Travis Reinking, 29, who opened fire at the restaurant just southeast of downtown Nashville on Sunday morning. As shots rang out, glass windows began to shatter, and as others ran for cover, Mr. Shaw and his best friend Brennan McMurry ran to the hallway outside the restrooms and behind a swinging door. During a brief pause in gunfire, Shaw sprinted from behind the door towards the gunman knocking him to the ground. He grabbed the rifle and tossed it behind the counter. The shooter then fled the scene and has been on the loose ever since*.

“I’m not a hero. I’m just a regular person,” Shaw said shortly after the shooting.

During his life-saving actions, Shaw sustained several injuries including a graze wound from a gunshot and a second-degree burn on his hand from grabbing the barrel of the rifle.

*The alleged shooter has been captured alive by police.
