powerful doc about white fear leading to a black man’s death earns 1st oscar nom for a trans director
Netflix’s Strong Island tells the story of the murder of William Ford by a white mechanic in Long Island in the 90s. The white man was never indicted after asserting that he was afraid for his life, and directed by William’s brother Yance, the film powerfully asks “whose fear is reasonable?” Strong Island was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary, making Yance Ford the first transgender director to ever be nominated for an Oscar.
