russell simmons, tavis smiley… “progressive” men are trash too

Three women have accused Russell Simmons of rape, while at least two other women have alleged other acts of sexual misconduct. (He says they are lying)

Last night, PBS announced that it had suspended the distribution of “Tavis Smiley” after “multiple, credible allegations” of sexual misconduct against Smiley were reported by Variety. Smiley took to Facebook to deny those claims, saying “I have the utmost respect for women and celebrate the courage of those who have come forth to tell their truth.” Except when it’s about him.

The fact that both of these men have progressive leanings says more to me than their shared ethnicity. These alleged forward-thinking men who proclaim that they support women are the same ones abusing us. It’s no longer enough to listen to a man’s words, and people should be more accountable for their actions.

There will come a day when we’re no longer flooded for the names and alleged behavior of public male figures who have committed crimes against women,

this movement is creating space for women to have a voice when abuse and harassment happen in real time. Talk is the cheapest. And now it’s time to hold accountable those with the most to say.
