Brasília Teimosa is a part of the Recife slums, and a safe space for the Black and poor in the area. This is the setting for “Black Summer,” a photo series collaboration by JE AN and Sarmurr documenting a protest by locals demanding recognition for the slum as a safe space.

By showing Black bodies that aren’t hidden or shamed, the models channel resistance through their style and makeup, proving that creativity is protest too. Highlighting Black and queer individuals, the series demonstrates Black excellence and queer love, with the message that these things can and are done out loud, and should be protected. As part of this project, they’re also bringing the Batekoo party to Recife.

Check out some of the images from the series below!
