being a black millennial in white spaces: rapper brz’s reflective ep, “don’t over think this”
“Are you in love with your life? / What is it that you fight? / What keeps you up at night? / I’m so good at posing questions I’ll never answer myself / Maybe it’s an extension of me never asking for help” raps Indiana-based hip-hop artist brz in “Between Shuttles,” the opening track to his new EP Don’t Overthink This. It is the perfect primer for the remaining five pensive songs that compose the album, together a deep meditation on what it means to be a Black millennial growing up in white spaces and the digital age. With an undeniably atmospheric sound, Don’t Overthink This boldly takes on topics like isolation despite hyper-connectivity, social justice, and self-discovery, with both shocking wisdom and an impressive flow.
“The EP was written during my sophomore and junior years at a PWI (Indiana University),” the rapper explains. “It tackles my discrepancies with such, as well as different forms of love and interaction in the digital age, the power that technology grants marginalized peoples, and generally, my experiences as a black millennial.”
