The company behind a new line of black toilet paper being sold in Brazil is under fire for its insensitive new ad appropriating the Civil Rights movement slogan “Black is Beautiful” to sell TP to the masses. Personal VIP black toilet paper was launched earlier in the week by Sao Paulo-based Santher and the campaign’s main advert features a famous white actress wrapped in the toilet paper. Needless to say, Afro-Brazilians and black folks all around the world have been calling out the racist appropriation of a phrase that’s meant so much to black empowerment.

The slogan originated from the 1960s Civil Rights movement where the phrase was used to instill self-love in black people who, in America, had long since been told that our ancestral features were ugly and undesirable. So, naturally, a company in Brazil felt free to jack the term to sell paper to wipe your ass with.
