Another day, another cop acquitted after killing a Black person.

On Friday, 22nd Judicial Circuit Court of Missouri, St. Louis Circuit Judge Timothy Wilson ruled that Officer Jason Stockley was not guilty in the murder of 24-year-old Anthony Lamar Smith in 2011. Stockley had said that Smith sped off while being investigated for what appeared to be a drug deal. Following a high speed chase, officers slammed their SUV into Smith’s car before Stockley got out and fired five shots into the crashed vehicle, killing Smith.

Prosecutors noted that the gun only had Stockley’s DNA on it, and none of Smiths. This along with the fact that Stockley was seen digging into a bag in the back seat of the police SUV before going back to Smith’s car after the shooting was evidence that Stockley planted the gun.

In the 30-page ruling, Judge Timothy Wilson disagreed. Citing the fact that Smith was an “urban heroin dealer,” Wilson argued that “possession of a firearm would [not] be an anomaly,” presuming that a gun would have been too big to hide in Stockley’s pants. We know what urban is code for here.

In response to the ruling, protests erupted in the city that is widely recognized as the birthplace for the Movement for Black Lives in 2014, after the killing and acquittal of 18-year-old Mike Brown.
