‘pariah’ director dee rees’ new film is coming, scored by rocker tamar-kali
For her much-anticipated new project, ‘Mudbound’, writer/director Dee Rees teamed up with musician Tamar-kali to develope the film’s emotional score. Described as a sprawling epic of a story set in post-war 1940s Mississippi Delta, ‘Mundbound’ follows two family—one white, one black—whose stories are bound together by poverty and strained by Jim Crow.
The film has already generated Oscar buzz since it debuted at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival to wide acclaim, which led to Netflix’s acquisition of the film’s distribution rights.
As for Tamar-kali, this is the rock singer’s first score composition which she completed over five weeks during post-production. “I don’t know how I did it,” she told Variety. “I lost hair. I gained weight. I think it’s such a testament to Dee’s leadership qualities. The project was pretty tight and intense.” The soundtrack isn’t specific to a period. “Dee talked about trying again, slipping, falling, things of this nature. We were using a lot of descriptive language to set the stage.”
‘Mundbound’ will premiere on Netflix streaming Nov. 17
