black womanhood flows in harmony with spirituality in soul artist renee dion’s ‘haven’
Columbus, OH-based singer/songwriter Renee Dion released her debut album, Moonlight, three years ago when she was newly married. The importance of that stage of her life in her music was evident throughout the album, which could easily be described a beautiful ode to love and possibility.
Her latest album, HAVEN, builds on those foundations, but clearly takes you into a new and more mature space in the artist’s life. Featuring 8-tracks, the new self-produced offering is a story of both Dion’s growth as a woman balancing the demands of womanhood and spirituality, and also as an artist.
Renee Dion tells AFROPUNK: “When creating this project, it required a lot of digging. It took me two years of facing my ugly truths to craft something beautiful,” Dion explained. “There is no doubt that this project has a spiritual tone to it and when crafting it, the last song I struggled with adding was “Deep.” That record is an intimate piece where I’m literally talking about the intimate time spent with my husband. I felt a little rebellious when recording it, but it feels so good to share my truth.”
