Two years ago, we featured New York-city based artist Stephane Metayer’s Nas-inspired graphic novel Tephlon Funk as it was crowdfunding for its first issue. Since then, the manga has caught the eye of Willow Smith, and maybe even Nas, whose hometown of Queensbridge is the setting of the story.

Now, Metayer hopes to take the the wave-making series to the next level, bringing it to the screen as an animated series.

Teaming up with fellow artist D’Art Shtajio to produce a minute-long concept teaser, Metayer hopes to gain the attention of executives willing to pick up the anime. Promising to represent the communities of color in New York City who are often overlooked in new and exciting ways, we are keeping our fingers crossed!

Tephlon Funk “focuses on Inez Jozlyn from Queensbridge, New York who is like any ordinary fourteen year old with dreams and aspirations. While others around her aspire to a life of crime, Inez’s ultimate goal is simple. She wants to leave the gang, and drug infested community she’s known her entire life for a life without struggle.” The trailer introduces three other main characters as well.
