On June 2nd, Blackbird Presents will release “Mavis Staples: I’ll Take You There – An All-Star Concert Celebration” on CD/DVD. The special event featured on the album took place at Chicago’s Auditorium Theater, with performances from Bonnie Raitt, Greg Allman, Jeff Tweedy, Win Butler and more. It also includes exclusive interviews with many of the participating artists, and explores Staples’ cultural and musical impact.

Just ahead of its release, we’ve got an exclusive performance from the night featuring the blues and gospel legend joined by Aaron Neville, singing the Civil Rights anthem “Respect Yourself”. Described by the Wall Street Journal as “often seen as the moment that gospel went secular,” The original recording of “Respect Yourself” was made by The Staples Singers in 1971, and quickly became an iconic representation of the era.

“That night was really special. To be able to see so many of my friends up there performing songs that I’ve sung for years was just incredible,” Explains Staples of the performance. “I couldn’t wait to get up there and take the stage myself! It was a night I’ll never forget.”
