new music: portuguese noise artist scúru fitchádu’s self-titled ep is the most punk rock fucking thing on the planet #soundcheck
By Nathan Leigh, AFROPUNK contributor
Theory: Cape Verdian artist Scúru Fitchádu’s self-titled EP is the most goddamn punk rock thing on the planet. Evidence: listen to this shit. Half the songs feature a knife as the primary percussion; the rest of them? Distorted noise. There’s a concertina mixed with distorted bass and glitched out jungle beats.
The last song on the Scúru Fitchádu EP by Scúru Fitchádu is also called “Scúru Fitchádu.” (It means Deep Dark). It’s not often that something grabs my attention and sends every sector of my brain scrambling. But for album highlight “S’ma Laba Burkan” (Volcano’s Lava) alone this EP is worth checking out. Conclusion: You ever seen that movie Pi? You know that scene where the dude drills into his own skull? Scúru Fitchádu is basically that, except it’s music.
