Black girl magic is getting supernatural! DC Comics and the CW are creating a new superhero series Black Lightning and they’ve tapped Code Black’s Nafessa Williams and House of Payne’s China Anne McClain to play the daughters of the main character. Written by Mara Brock Akil and Salim Akil and based on the DC character created by Tony Isabella with Trevor Von Eeden, the new series will follow lead Cress Williams. Deadline reports this as the teaser synopsis: “He made his choice: He hung up the suit and his secret identity years ago, but with a daughter, Jennifer (McCain) hellbent on justice and a star student being recruited by a local gang, he’ll be pulled back into the fight as the wanted vigilante and DC legend Black Lightning.” McCain’s role is Jefferson’s youngest daughter Jennifer Pierce, the teenaged outspoken scholar-athlete with a wild streak, while Williams is Anissa Pierce — a passionate and quick-witted twenty-something daughter balancing the demands of medical school with her job teaching part-time at her father’s school. In the DC comics, Anissa and Jennifer follow in their father’s footsteps and become superheroes, taking on the names of Thunder and Lightning, respectively, but we’ll see how liberally the Akil’s make the adaptation. Look out for more updates on Black Lightning on the CW!
