jordan peele’s ‘get out’ leads weekend box office, grossing $30.5 million

February 27, 2017

Black filmmakers are winning in more ways than one as of late. While news of ‘Moonlight’ getting Best Picture at the Oscars was mired in controversy of the announcement brought, the numbers from Jordan Peele’s horror film ‘Get Out’ are speaking for themselves. Leading this weekend in the box office with $30.5 million dollars, ‘Get Out’ is getting moviegoers off the couch and into the theater in a way that hasn’t been seen since another Black film, ‘Hidden Figures.’ With an unheard of 100% rating from Rotten Tomatoes, ‘Get Out’ is looking to score big with audiences because of its uncanny incorporation of race into the horror genre. Starring Daniel Kaluuya, LaKeith Stanfield, Bradley Whitford, and more, the story follows a young Black man who is visiting his girlfriend’s family for the first time, when he finds out that they don’t know his race yet. Peele has expressed that he’s taking aim at America’s liberal elite in this film and that horror is the best genre to address these issues, because they’re truly a nightmare for those who live it everyday. Get your tickets to ‘Get Out’ while you can, it looks like they’ll be hard to come by pretty soon!
