new music: warm up with wade brown’s sensual ‘coffee’ ep #soundcheck

January 5, 2017

“See, I been on a journey / trying to learn what love should be” Wade Brown sings on the EP closing “Elevate.” The singer’s 7 track Coffee EP is a love song to black beauty, to the “beautiful women with the melanin skin.” The album conjures classic snow jams with a modern twist, like early D’Angelo with 808s, particularly on highlight “The Menu.” Brown is a smart collaborator bringing in a team of producers and guest vocalists, most notably GypsySoul, whose guest spot on “Identity Interlude” nearly steals the show with her fluttering duet. Though Brown’s lyrics sometimes flirt with the line between celebration and objectification, the EP is a warm cup of coffee on a cold morning. Stay inside and warm up with this one.
