paris contre trump: an anti-trump protest in paris

November 28, 2016

In spite of the 40-degree weather, close to 1000 protesters gathered in the streets of Paris last Saturday. The reason was simple, to publicly display their frustration, anger and hurt surrounding the election of Donald Trump. Whether chanting in English, French or Spanish, the protesters expressed their thoughts with passion. Of the many, one chant was repeatedly returned to:

Muslim rights are human rights!
Muslim rights are human rights!

Perhaps its popularity came from its ability to easily transform into “trans rights,” “women’s rights” and the rights of many other oppressed groups. Or perhaps the crowd was drawn to the relevancy of its text—relevant in the US where the president-elect has called for a complete shutdown of Muslims entering the country. Relevant in France where Marine Le Pen, a presidential candidate hoping to take office next year, has compared Muslims praying in the street to Nazi occupation.

For hours, protestors marched through the Trocadéro district near the Eiffel Tower. The citizens were a varied group comprised of several ethnicities, nationalities and sexual orientations. Despite these differences their shouts rang in harmony, united against Trump and the wave of white supremacy that continues to threaten the world.
