new music: childish gambino unleashes the funk with new single “me and your mama”

November 11, 2016

If you thought the buck stopped with Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp A Butterfly, think again. It seems that our favorite nerdy Black rapper is returning with some serious funk. Childish Gambino is just wrapping up a stellar creative year with his show Atlanta, and now he’s unleashed a searing single to reintroduce himself to the sonic side of his mind. But what we’ve received is unlike anything we’ve heard from him prior and to be quite transparent, it doesn’t sound like it’s from this world. Gambino’s vocals oscillate between Bilal, James Brown, and Curtis Mayfield, while the instrumentation morphs from a trap leaning jazz sound to a full blown cacophony of funk and soul. I was not prepared. You were not prepared. No one was ready and even after you hear it, you won’t be, so sit back, strap yourself in and take the ride of a lifetime with Childish Gambino’s new single, “Me and Your Mama” from forthcoming album “Awaken, My Love!”
