media & white democrats, don’t normalize a racist president

November 17, 2016

The Democratic party is reeling after the election of Donald Trump to the office of president as well as an overwhelming majority of Republicans in Congress. As the days progress, it seems that many are taking the business as usual approach in regards to accepting Trump as the new president-elect, so much so that Senate Dems are already thinking of ways to work with him. Minority leader Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), said he doesn’t want to take the approach Republicans took when President Obama took office and block all of his policy and legislation. “When we can agree on issues, then we’re going to work with him,” Schumer told reporters. “But I’ve also said to the president-elect, on issues where we disagree, we expect a strong and tough fight. And that’s how the relationship is going to be.”

In any other election, this would be seen as an act of good faith, but this situation is faithless. Moving forward like you would with any other president isn’t an option here: the xenophobic, racist, sexist, misogyny spewed from his campaign will not cease. Having a white supremacist as the chief strategist is proof of that. Inviting Rudy Giuliani to serve on your cabinet is proof of that. All signs point to Trump being as vile of a leader as he promised he would be, so why should we normalize anything he has to say? Why not do everything you can to protect the people who elected you and the rest of the country from whatever’s coming?
