afropunk premiere: cleanse the world with fire in askmeificare’s defiant punk opus “’merica on fire” #soundcheck

November 11, 2016

The fact that so many Americans are waking up to the shock that bigotry and bullshit are still a dominant force in the country doesn’t change the fact that a lot of people have been shouting it all along. Among them is Askmeificare, whose latest single we’re premiering. “’Merica On Fire” is an 8 minute punk opus that falls firmly on the “fuck it all; cleanse it with fire” side of the argument. “Arrest the poor but don’t touch the rich” frontman Raw sings. He lays out the hypocrisy of a country that will elect a billionaire white supremacist despite ongoing fraud and sexual assault investigations, while jailing the homeless for the crime of having no home, and locking up black and brown people for smoking something that’s now legal in huge chunks of the country. It’s hard not to take up the band’s cry to “let it burn,” though as they remind in the anthemic coda, “we rise from the ashes and create what should have been created: a nation truly of equals.” This isn’t nihilism, it’s righteous anger in search of a more just world. But first: fire.
