video premiere: spit-fire rapper sammus gives “100 percent” in new video ft. latasha alcindor

October 25, 2016

Some people talk a lot about being authentic as a musician and rapper Sammus is no exception. In her newest music video “100 Percent” she slays her verses as she literally schools people on how to give it their all. Directed by Vince Lundi, the video also features Afropunk alum Latasha Alcindor delivering verses.

Speaking on the inspiration for the song, Sammus states that she wrote the song after performing at SXSW for over two years. “Anybody who has ever been to my live shows knows that I give all of myself to the stage—whether there’s one person in the audience or one thousand. But some of the artists with the biggest platforms at SXSW were giving lackluster performances, and I was so frustrated and disappointed I made this song”.

Although Sammus is spitting out gems of advice for her fellow musicians, the lyrics can be applied to anyone trying to put themselves out there. One notable verse goes, “My moms say/never cut a corner/that’s the wrong way/the cost ain’t worth it/if you wanna make it perfect”.

“100 Percent” is from Sammus’ upcoming debut album Pieces in Space, which will be released on October 28th. Pre-order the album here.
