Ms. Lauryn Hill’s brand of musicianship centers truth and resistance over anything else. In the wake of constant police brutality protests nationwide, it’s hard to imagine that a song from 2002 could be quite so relevant, but “Rebel/I Find It Hard To Say” is just as poignant today as it was when Ms. Lauryn Hill first performed it on MTV Unplugged 2.0. In a statement released alongside the track, Lauryn Hill says, “Old tune, new Version, same context, even more relevant now: sick and tired of being sick and tired.” We can’t agree more.
