video premiere: brooklyn-born rapper smth issues chilling, introspective call for black liberation in ‘mark of the beast (human)’

July 20, 2016

As the fight for Black Lives is amplified, it saturates all aspects of entertainment. Today, we are premiering the recent work of one of the many, importantly woke artists who use their craft to shift the tide: SMTH, the Brooklyn-born rapper, has answered the call and is offering a considerable input. In the new video for his latest track ‘Mark of the Beast (Human)’ the steady yearn for relief is artistically pedestrianized to the rawest form; as visuals of him squaring off with a cop mix with those of a naked, obviously shaken black woman- SMTH succeeds in vocalizing the necessity for clarity as well as the invasiveness of the media with recent traumas. Serving as an introduction for his latest album ‘SMTH Project II: Dark Days in America’, (Human) is a blanket, yet moving statement, with the video pushing his powerful lyrics further : ‘The world needs change like a bum needs change’. There is a tight partnership of simplicity and complexity in this piece, and it definitely adds fuel to the fire of the conversation. Check out ‘Mark of the Beast (Human)’ below.
