new music: gaborone-based rokara uses alt-rock to celebrate botswanan culture and tradition #soundcheck
Gaborone-based trio Rokara got together in 2006 to channel Botswanan culture and tradition through alt-rock. Marrying Tswana vocals to electric guitars, the band has a unique sound. Less heavy and more melodically driven than many of the other bands from the Gabrone scene like Skinflint and Crackdust, guitarist Shalton Monnawadikgang rarely uses distortion outside of solos. The band recently posted 5 tracks to their Reverb Nation page, the best of which, “Mama” and “Segametsi” both feature a seamless merging of Tswana music and late 90’s alternative. The full collection is available for download on Reverb Nation. (https://www.reverbnation.com/rokara)
