feature: meet the 5 afro-brazilian artists making their mark at dak’art—africa’s largest art event

May 9, 2016

May 3-10, Dakar, Senegal will host the 12th edition of Africa’s largest art event and biennial, “Dak’Art 2016.” Artists from African countries, including Nigeria, Ethiopia, Malawi, South Africa and Burkina Faso will present alongside artists of the African Diaspora, from France, Italy and Brazil. Their objectives are “to expand the possibilities of promoting African artists poorly represented in major international art, but also for Africa to develop its own speech on aesthetics.” Solange Farkas, founder and director of Associação Cultural Videobrasil, selected Afro-Brazilian artists Moises Patricio, Sônia Gomes, Daniel Lima, Paulo Nazareth and Thiago Martins de Melo to represent Brazil. As a curator, Farkas sees the Biennial as an opportunity to encourage and fortify ties between Afro-Brazilian artists and the continent. Farkas achieved international recognition through her organization Video Brasil’s 30 year old International Electronic Art Festival she hosts in Sao Paulo. According to Farkas this event will also present a way “for artists to add new layers of meaning to [their] art …. while providing a very rich way to rekindle the flame of artistic production that deals with issues of black identity.”
