new music: listen to new music from comorian island rocker m’toro chamou’s “punk islands”

April 1, 2016

M’toro Chamou is an artist/writer/performer/composer from the island of Mayotte—an overseas department of France that lies within the Indian Ocean. Throughout it’s history, the island has been the subject of controversial ownership, as many believe the island belongs to The Comoros, despite being occupied by French law and influence and a military base. This struggle against western colonizing forces is the a prominent theme in M’toro’s music. Through his lyrics, M’toro brings awareness to the shrinking of Comoros culture and speaks against western colonization. His unique sound is a blend of traditional (M’Godro) rhythms, ska-ish punk rock, and blues.

Check out videos for his latest singles “Umani A/C” and “M’Godro Street Le Pas De L’Evolution”, both from his new album “Punk Island”, down below.
