feature: fotopoetizando promotes black empowerment through togetherness in ‘ocupação preta’ series

April 19, 2016

‘OCUPAÇÃO PRETA’ or ‘Black Occupation’ is an editorial series by Brazilian photographer Thassio Dias of Fotopoetizando. ‘Ocupação Preta’ is an expression of the inherent unity between all black identities. Think of this series as the application of Shine Theory geared towards black identities instead of being gender specific. “To be empowered is to understand that we are in this fight [against white supremacy] together and togetherness is the only way we can be free. I will not be free while there are blacks who are not—even if their lives are very different from mine,” Creative Director Gabriel Hilair wrote on Facebook.
