feature: activist and creative amandla stenberg set to star in black lives matter-inspired film “the hate u give”
Activist and creative Amandla Stenberg is set to star in the film “The Hate U Give”, an adaptation of Angela Thomas’ debut YA novel of the same title that was inspired by the recent events surrounding the Black Lives Matters movement. The novel follows a 16-year-old girl, Starr who, after growing up in a poverty- stricken slum, now attends an elite suburban prep school. Soon after, Starr witnesses a police officer shoot her unarmed best friend. Starr struggles when she is caught between both of her worlds and trying to speak the truth.
Both the unreleased novel and rights to its film recently underwent extremely competitive bidding wars, the latter being aquired by Balzer + Bray and the former by Fox 2000, Temple Hill and State Street. The film is set to be directed by George Tillman Jr. with Audrey Wells as screenwriter.
