new music: chicago-based singer/songwriter eryn allen kane drops killer single ‘how many times’

January 19, 2016

First things first—Eryn Allen Kane is incredible. Period. I say so and so does Prince. So, that’s that.

Kane, a Detroit-native, now based in Chicago, writes all of her songs by vocalizing the instrumentation and harmonies herself, before having them translated by other musicians. “I do the entire thing just like that,” Kane told Essence. “Then for my EP I did all my songs like that and then gave it to my friends who are instrumentalists and said, ‘Okay can we translate these vocals into the percussion, the horn sections and the guitar, and this and that?” ‘Have Mercy’ is the lone vocal-only track on the record—it’s amazing.

Kane effortlessly conjures jazz-inspired vocal acrobatics and chill-inducing crescendos that are only ever preformed by a truly original and present soul vocalist. Sounds like hyperbole? Listen to the first 90-seconds of ‘How Many Times’. You’re welcome.

Eryn’s EP ‘Aviary: Act II’ comes out Feb. 2. You can listen to her debut ‘Aviary: Act I’ here.
