Check out Brazilian photographer Kelvin Yule‘s OXE! editorial, which pays tribute to the natural and cultural beauty of Bahia, Brazil. OXE! was born out of a need to represent Bahian identity and artistic cultural without additional foreign influences. Yule uses the natural beauty of Bahia’s landscapes and people, regional textile prints and other fashions to create a multi-layered representation of the Bahian culture.

“With the editorial OXE! we [Yule and creative partner Matheus de Morais] came to talk about the importance of the black representation in fashion with a touch of palm. Dendê is the fruit of a palm tree known as Oil Palm, which is the raw material of palm oil, which is a popular oil in Brazilian and Angolan culinary art and also in Candomblé. Indispensable in the Afro-Brazilian cuisine, it is used in dishes such as pigweed, vatapd, acarajé, shrimp bobo, several fish stew, etc. Familiarity, unity, diversity, creativity, Oxe! goes to show that there are strong and striking touches in Bahia productions and we need not enforce a foreign culture to present our potential. The editorial comes, too, with the proposal to focus on traits, prints and fashion of Bahia that are relevant to the construction of the national scene,” Yule tells AFROPUNK.
