feature: french-moroccan photographer leila alaoui has died after injuries sustained in burkina faso

January 19, 2016

Leila Alaoui was a French-Moroccan fine artist photographer whose haunting images chronicled Middle East/North African (MENA) migration, displacement, poverty, and cultural identity. Alaoui was in Burkina Faso working on a women’s rights photo series for Amnesty International when this weekend’s terrorist attack took place. Alaoui died yesterday from wounds she sustained outside of the Cappuccino Cafe.

Alaoui’s work was remarkable, and so was her ability to photograph complicated cultural experiences and disenfranchisement without clichés, sentimentality, and exploitation. We invite you to take a moment to remember Alaoui and the work she leaves behind. You can see more of her work here and here.
