feature: the ‘afrobapho’ project – empowering marginalized voices in the intersection among race, gender and sexuality

December 2, 2015

Check out the latest photo series from Afrobapho – a digital project that “stands for black people’s empowerment and visibility in Brazil,” as stated by Alan Costa (an openly gay Afro-Brazilian living in Salvador, Bahia, and part of the project). Costa tells us: “The Afrobapho is a space earmarked for visibility and empowerment of marginalized voices in the intersection among race, gender and sexuality (in a black struggle perspective). The project was raised in Salvador, Bahia, Brazil, but it has some ramifications in others brazilian states. It aims to show the resistance of the black population amidst everyday prejudices. This is a visibility space where we encourage people who are not in the line of normative behavior / performance, gender, beauty and sexuality – that society puts as normal parameters. Gay black effeminate men (fabulous), black trans women, black trans men, black lesbians, fat black people, drag culture from the perspective of struggle and resistance, among other expressions and experiences that break the rules institutionalized by the excluding society.” CLICK HERE to find out more about Afrobapho, and take a look at the images below (by photographers Jeanine Maíra and Tauan Carmo).
