afropunk premiere: ‘fire [vip]’ – south african dj/producer muzi releases explosive remix of his track, ‘fire’

December 11, 2015

Today we’re premiering a new track from South African DJ and producer Muzi. The DJ (who grew up in the Empangeni township of the north-east of South Africa) recently dropped his ‘Fire FX’ EP, and today we’re sharing a remix of one of its tracks: ‘FIRE [VIP]’. Muzi tells us, “After finishing ‘Fire FX’ EP, my creative juices were still flowing. Felt like i could still do more and express/reinterpret some of the tracks. This is how ‘Fire [VIP]’ came about. I was going to just have it as a dj tool at first but then I thought, everyone has gotta hear this!!, My 90s Kwaito influences came through on this one.” Also, in regards to his trademark sound (an explosive blend of hip-hop and electronica, all the while paying homage to his South African roots), Muzi states: “The hardness of the sound is probably because I come from a very bad background. People used to tell me my music was very violent. Maybe that is true because that’s what I grew up seeing. But the energy of it is happy and positive. I’ll never take you to a dark place with my music, because I know how that feels.” Stream the remix below.
