film: ‘akounak’ – the tuareg/nigerien remake of ‘purple rain’

November 19, 2015

Check out a short clip of new feature film, ‘Akounak’ – a Tuareg/Nigerien remake of ‘Purple Rain’ set in the city of Agadez, Niger. The clip is courtesy of Dangerous Minds, who describe the film as “a visually sumptuous and musically thrilling movie that works splendidly with or without the Purple Rain mythos. But riffing on Prince’s tale locates Purple Rain’s universal heartbeat.” The film’s director Christopher Kirkley states that the film (which centers on a musician who travels in the desert with his guitar on a purple motorbike) is “a revolutionary story of guitars, motorcycles, cell phones – and the music of a new generation”. Watch the clip below, and CLICK HERE for more info on the film.
