feature: alabama brings in tougher voter id law, and then conveniently shuts down driver’s license offices in black counties

October 7, 2015

Yes, you heard right! According to Talking Points Memo, Alabama (a Republican state) has closed down 31 driver’s license offices in black counties, after enforcing a tough new voter ID law. Alabama’s excuse: “budget crisis”. AL.com columnist John Archibald is quoted as saying, “Every single county in which blacks make up more than 75 percent of registered voters will see their driver license office closed. Every one”. At a panel on voting rights in DC, Representative Terri Sewell (D-AL) said, “I grew up in Selma; I’m a third-generation Alabamian […] My own dad stood in lines for water fountain labeled ‘colored.’ So now it’s frightening that we’re seeing a renewed assault on voting rights, including these DMV closures. It’s unconscionable and we should not just sit back and let this happen.” However, could this be more than race? Apparently all the closed offices were in Democrat-leaning counties.
