feature: thando hopa – a model and activist fighting for the rights of africans with albinism

August 25, 2015

Meet Thando Hopa, a South African supermodel with albinism who is using her platform to fight the discrimination faced by many albinos in Africa. Raised in a supportive and loving home in Soweto – born to black African parents without the condition – the African model and activist (also a lawyer) was unprepared for the prejudice she would face from children and adults when she began school (all because of her white skin and blonde hair); and she is determined to change things, so that others don’t experience that same abuse. Check out her photos below and CLICK HERE to watch her interview.

” Being black is a form of identity for me. It is far more complex than colour, it is a label that helps us latch on to a sense of self, and perhaps even a sense of belonging.”
