new music: stream the classic soul of soul understated’s ‘on the shoulders of giants’ #soundcheck

July 27, 2015

Soul Understated is far from understated on their On The Shoulders of Giants EP. From the deep pocket grooves of “Honey Glaze” to the neo-soul jam “Follow Your Mind” to that stunning go go riff of “Go Go Party,” singer / songwriter Mavis ‘SWAN’ Poole and drummer / bandleader Jeremy ‘BEAN’ Clemons pay tribute to the eras and permutations of funk and soul music. The band delivers with a steaming horn section, always quick with a stab and accent. Their stunning clarinet-led cover of Curtis Mayfield’s classic activist anthem “People Get Ready” builds from a minute and a half of sound collage before BEAN settles into a soft beat. The open space of that rimshot beat affords SWAN the room to flex her vocal chops like nowhere else on the record. But it’s on “Same Ole Groove,” where the band’s sound comes into focus. Over an infectious groove, wah guitars vie with the horn section for focus, while SWAN’s chilled out vocal keeps the party going. Fans of classic funk and soul, don’t sit this one out.
