new music: engone endong’s #okeng marries highlife and afrobeat to futurist hip-hop production #soundcheck

July 28, 2015

It’s the rare instrumental beat tape that stands on its own. But with its mix of hip-hop, highlife, and Afrobeat, Montreal-based Gabonese producer Engone Endong creates an engaging and unique sonic universe. Most tracks run under 2 minutes, with mvett loops and 70’s breaks doing battle with ultra-deep synth basslines and beats. The jagged cut loops and soundscapes keep his futurist-leanings grounded. “Atarega,” “Mvõn,” and “Aton Oyane” especially make killer use of the contrast. Meanwhile closing cut “Gods Among Us,” the sole track to pass 3 minutes, is the purest distillation of Engone Endong’s aesthetic and skill as a producer.
