art: ‘black british girlhood’ exhibition – “celebrating and affirming black women/girls and their work”

July 16, 2015

A collective of three young black artists working in the UK (Bekke Popoola, Kariima Ali, and Olivia Mathurin-Essandoh) have brought together some of the UK’s most talented black women visual artists for an upcoming exhibition, entitled ‘Black British Girlhood’, and are bringing light to narratives often kept in the dark by the British art industry and mass media. With a focus on “sharing, celebrating and affirming Black women/girls and their work”, the exhibition – which takes place next week in London (details below) – will feature the work of artists such as Kay Davis and ‘Strolling’ filmmaker Cecile Emeke. Check out their work underneath, plus the creations of the other talented women involved.
