video premiere: rat habitat goes from boombox to yoga in ‘murphy’s word’ ft. chris turner

May 1, 2015

Brooklyn-based electro-soul band Rat Habitat’s new video for ‘Murphy’s Word’ is premiereing today on AFROPUNK.
Here is what the band has to say about the release: ““Murphy’s Word” was produced by guitarist Jordan Peters (aka Commissioner Wallace) and vocalist/flutist Melanie Charles (aka D’Flower), the brains behind the Brooklyn based project Rat Habitat. The dreamy soundscapes and hard hitting beat created by the Commissioner, lead the way to D’Flowers’s brilliant lyrics and melodies. The inspiration for the lyrics came to her one night in between sets at a jazz gig in the Bronx with fellow NYC bass player Spencer Murphy (Gabriel Garzón Montano), who poetically said “its just a ticket to another sensation” – hence the title “Murphy’’s Word”.
The track features BET Music Matters artist Chris Turner. The Oakland born artist is currently touring with his own band as well as Esperanza Spalding, Harvey Mason, Kris Bowers, Eric Harland and is set to release his debut album “LOVEchild”, very soon.
D’flowers verse addresses the spiritual side of male and female interaction, and Chris Turner’s verse delves into the more sensual side. All in all “Murphy’s Word” is an anthem celebrating the worth of all people, encouraging us to respect one another as the Kings and Queens we are.
Despite its positive message, this visual also brings a pleasant quirkiness including the Haitian Vévé symbol of Haitian Goddess Erzulie and a huge “RAT” mascot if you will; A ticket to another sensation… This visual features cameos from vocalist Starr Busby, artist and yogi Tamara Renée (as yoga instructor), and Ngonda Badilla (Lady Moon and the Eclipse).
The video was directed by Melanie Charles and brokeMC in Bushwick, Brooklyn. Shot and Edited by brokeMC and Zach Murphy.
