art: painting faces – the work of portrait artist kern bruce
Explore the work of portrait artist Kern Bruce. Hailing from Newark, New Jersey, Bruce is known for his beautifully penciled captures and the use of unwanted materials as canvases. Often focusing his work on black women and their natural hair, he says: “I’m drawing women of different hues. All beautiful, natural, unapologetically them. There are lots of images of beautiful black women but very few examples of black beauty. As an image maker I make images to serve and empower. I hope to have a daughter one day. The last thing I want her thinking growing up is that the texture of her hair or hue of he skin is some how ugly or wrong. I make art for her.” See Kern Bruce’s work below, plus a flyer for an upcoming event that will showcase his art.
