feature: in search of boys with afros – the ‘finding dante’ project

February 10, 2015

Rico Washington, a New York based journalist, has gained much attention for his recent collaboration with sociopolitical artist Shino Yanagawa – a photojournalism project currently displayed at the Brooklyn Historical Society called ‘We The People: The Citizens of NYCHA in Pictures + Words’ (includes notable faces such as Jamel Shabazz, Nelson George, Sharon Jones, and Yasiin Bey). Now Washington and Yanagawa, focused on creating works that debunk stigmas and stereotypes, are embarking on their next project; a response to the recent social unrest in the US, and specifically in New York City. For this project, the duo are looking for Black and Latino teenage boys with afros to be interviewed and photographed for the Harlem exhibit/ after school program this month (see image below). More info and ways to support the project here.
