free download: check the socially conscious soul of unix’s ‘stupid little shit’ #soundcheck

January 2, 2015

If we’re seeing a revival of socially conscious soul music, it can’t come a minute too soon. Nearly un-Google-able soul singer Unix litters his music to references to the stupid things we prioritize over the very real very large issues our society faces. It’s music that—like many artists from the 60’s and 70’s but tragically few recently—redirects soul’s love-centric focus towards a more radical inclusive love for society as a whole. The operating system named singer is quick to point out the distractions and diversions that distract from the real issues, after all, the EP’s called Stupid Little Shit.

“There’s no room for love / How does it fit in? / All the noise, noise / Stupid noise” Unix sings in the opener “Stupid Noise.” But before he gets too big, Unix contradicts himself beautifully in “Little Things.” While the stupid little shit may distract from the larger issues of social justice, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take the time to appreciate the beautiful little moments life has to offer. “The little things / It’s all about the little things / The little things / Has kept you in my mind”

The album’s centerpiece is the acoustic soul of “Love Lives.” It’s book ended with a clip of “Black Lives Matter” chants that’s well on it’s way to becoming ubiquitous in socially themed music. “We organize these man-made things / And give them cool names like the government,“ Unix sings before essentially calling for a strike for justice. “But if we all took a moment of time to realize the bottom line / Without our broke asses there’d be no classes.” The EP ends with his most pop track, an electro R&B song about lost love. It may be the little things that distract from the big issues, but it’s also those distractions that sometimes make life worthwhile. If only there was a Unix command for social justice. # Sudo fsck -f -y /world/America… Barring that, at least this EP is free on Bandcamp? It’s the little things.
