feature: spike lee releases new movie online & says “fuck’em” to hollywood after ‘selma’ snub
Spike Lee has released his new joint, ‘Da Sweet Blood of Jesus’ ahead of its theatrical release next month. An adaptation of the 1973 blaxploitation film ‘Ganja and Hess’, the film is now available to stream and buy on Vimeo. Check out the trailer, below! Also, if you’ve seen this year’s Oscar nominations, you would have noticed not only the lack of diversity across all major categories (unlike last year, which saw Lupita Nyong’o win the award for Best Supporting Actress), but also the “snubbing” of probably this year’s most important and relevant film, ‘Selma’. Talking to the Daily Beast, Spike Lee has advised ‘Selma’ director Ava Duvernay to “Fuck em” – famously snubbed by the Academy for his most celebrated films ‘Do The Right Thing’ and ‘Malcolm X’. “That doesn’t diminish the film. Nobody’s talking about motherf–kin’ ‘Driving Miss Daisy’” says Lee. He continues, outspoken as ever, “That film is not being taught in film schools all across the world like ‘Do The Right Thing’ is. Nobody’s discussing ‘Driving Miss Motherf–kin’ Daisy’. So if I saw Ava today, I’d say, ‘You know what? Fuck ’em. You made a very good film, so feel good about that and start working on the next one.”
