feature: ‘black doll life’, a web page celebrating black dolls
“The more of their own likeness they see in the things they like, the more accepting they will be of their looks and culture” – the words of Taofick Okoya, creator of the ‘Queens of Africa‘ dolls (currently outselling Barbie in Nigeria). In a world where Black girls and boys are continually bombarded with European standards of beauty, it is increasingly necessary that they are represented in what they see on a daily basis – and a priority should be the dolls that they play with. In celebration of Black dolls and this form of representation, a tumblr page has been created by the name of ‘The Black Doll Life‘. Although its focus is on dolls of a fashion size; this page is still an amazing sight to see. Explore some of its images, below.
