video premiere: kahli abdu and trackpants’ rebellious ‘on this side’

October 7, 2014

Today we’re premiering ‘On This Side’, the new video from Brooklyn-based band Kahli Abdu x Make/Believe (Nigerian born singer/rapper Kahli Abdu and production duo Make/Believe).
The guys tell us: “On This Side is about joyful rebellion and being in tune with ones destiny. Inspired by the creative scene in Brooklyn, the track is an ode to all who have made the journey from all over the world to New York to pursue their dreams. The beat was started by David of Make/Believe trying to write a guitar part that sounded like The Smiths. When production partner Will heard the track, he added the bass and some rearranging. The resulting sound gave the group vibes similar to the Fuggees, and Kahli accentuated that with his vocals. As is often the case with the trio’s creative process, they feed off of each others mistakes, and all seem to recognize when something that they love has been created.
The video is directed by filmmaker Jay Sprogell. It shows Kahli Abdu and Make/Believe as they hang out in a Brooklyn backyard with friends, and then follows them on to a performance at the Gutter in Williamsburg, BK.”
Check out the video below and catch them performing with Sinkane in D.C. this Wednesday October 8th, and at the Aputumpu CMJ Showcase in Brooklyn on October 21st.
